The brief
Creating a private wellness retreat
The clients’ vision was to create a luxurious, tranquil forest retreat, designed to be enjoyed as both a family home and rental property throughout the seasons.
An important part of this vision was the creation of a new spa and wellness space under permitted development, bringing together swimming, fitness and relaxation. At the centre of the brief was a substantial swimming pool, providing space for regular exercise alongside hydrotherapy and relaxation.
The surrounding facilities needed to feel luxurious and welcoming, with a contemporary aesthetic, exceptional finishes and a strong visual connection to the gardens and surrounding New Forest landscape.
Butterscotch Design was responsible for the complete interior design of the spa, developing the spatial layout, material palette, finishes and bespoke details in collaboration with the specialist pool contractor.
The spa experience
A contemporary wellness retreat
The spa design takes inspiration from the surrounding New Forest landscape, capturing the tranquillity and secluded atmosphere of a woodland retreat.
At its heart is a 14-metre swimming and hydrotherapy pool, designed for fitness and relaxation within a calm, contemporary setting. A striking split-face natural stone wall introduces warmth and texture, with the stone appearing to continue beneath the waterline. Rich turquoise mosaic tiles give the pool a beautiful depth of colour, shimmering as they catch the light, while large-format, pale marble-effect floor tiles provide a refined contrast.
The spa also features a steam hammam, experience shower and fully glazed gym overlooking the pool. Expansive glazing opens up views across the landscaped gardens, connecting the interior wellness spaces with the surrounding woodland and bringing natural light into the spa.
The design also incorporated bespoke artwork created specifically for the spa. A panoramic New Forest landscape was developed as a large-scale printed wall mural for the gym, bringing the colours and atmosphere of the surrounding heathland into the fitness space. Sculptural, leaf-inspired illuminated artwork was also designed for the pool hall, introducing an organic element that complements the natural stone and creates a striking feature reflected in the water.
Outdoor wellness
Relaxation in the landscape
The outdoor wellness design extends the spa experience into the surrounding gardens, with an external hydropool and infinity-edge swimming pool positioned to take advantage of views across the landscape.
Landscaped relaxation and entertaining areas create inviting spaces to unwind, socialise and enjoy the peaceful New Forest setting throughout the seasons.
A natural progression
Extending the design into the home
The clients were delighted with the spa design and subsequently invited Butterscotch Design to develop the interiors of the main residence, carrying the same contemporary aesthetic and attention to detail throughout the property.
Our involvement encompassed spatial planning, material and finish specifications, bespoke joinery and detailed interior design, supported by site visits and ongoing coordination with the wider project team.
The interiors combine clean architectural lines with rich materials, luxurious finishes and carefully considered detailing, creating a consistent design language across the home.
Bespoke residential interiors
Designed around the way the clients live
Individual spaces were developed around the clients’ lifestyle, with an emphasis on craftsmanship, material quality and bespoke detailing.
Our interior concept explored a series of distinctive settings across the home: a dramatic entrance and staircase, an informal kitchen seating area with a reclaimed hardwood bar, a richly layered cigar lounge, family living spaces and carefully detailed bedroom suites. Each space was considered through plans, material palettes, furniture selections and visualisations.
A private cigar lounge introduces a darker, more atmospheric character, with rich finishes and bespoke cabinetry creating an intimate space for relaxation and entertaining.
A custom-designed wine cellar was integrated beneath the staircase, with the staircase itself refined as part of the wider interior scheme.
The principal bedroom suite incorporates a bespoke walk-in wardrobe and en suite, with fitted furniture and finishes developed specifically for the space.
The outcome
A continuing design relationship
What began as a private spa commission developed into a wider collaboration encompassing the interiors of the main residence.
The completed spa brings together swimming, fitness and relaxation within a luxurious contemporary environment, with natural materials, refined detailing and carefully considered connections to the surrounding gardens.
The subsequent residential commission reflects the relationship established through the initial project and a shared appreciation for quality, craftsmanship and thoughtful design.
Together, the two commissions demonstrate Butterscotch Design’s approach to creating distinctive private environments that bring wellness, leisure and everyday living.
