The brief

Bringing a new dimension to Champneys Springs

Champneys Springs is an established destination spa in the Leicestershire countryside, offering guests a place to relax, recharge and enjoy a wide range of spa treatments.

Butterscotch Design was commissioned to develop design concepts for the resort’s treatment and relaxation areas, alongside a new thermal suite that would introduce a contemporary interpretation of traditional bathing experiences.

The ambition was to create a series of connected environments, each with its own character and purpose, while establishing a cohesive design language across the spa.

Natural materials, considered lighting and a strong connection to the senses would shape the experience, creating spaces for cleansing, relaxation and restoration.

The thermal suite

A contemporary interpretation of the hammam

The thermal suite concept drew inspiration from the traditional hammam, reinterpreting the bathing ritual as a contemporary sequence of heat, water, cold and relaxation.

At its centre, a bespoke Kneipp water experience was designed with heated reclining loungers, integrated leg massage jets and an infinity-edge water feature.

Arranged around this central experience, a herbal sauna, aromatic salt steam room, winter mist experience and mountain-fresh experience showers offered different ways to cleanse, stimulate and restore the body.

Heated relaxation cabanas completed the journey, providing intimate spaces to rest between experiences.

A soft, natural palette of pale stone, timber and decorative screens was complemented by subtle lighting, creating a calm and contemporary environment with a distinctive architectural identity.

Treatment & relaxation

Spaces to pause, unwind and restore

The wider design explored a collection of treatment rooms, relaxation suites and private chill pods, each offering a different level of comfort and privacy.

Rich timber, natural stone, tactile finishes and atmospheric lighting shaped the treatment environments, while bespoke screens, integrated seating and carefully planned layouts brought character and functionality to each space.

Private chill pods introduced a more secluded experience, with individual retreats designed around soft furnishings, natural materials and layered lighting.

From concept to detail

Bringing the vision together

The designs were developed from initial concepts through spatial planning, material selection, bespoke detailing and detailed interior layouts.

Together, the thermal suite, treatment rooms and relaxation environments established a cohesive design vision for Champneys Springs, connecting individual wellness experiences through a consistent approach to materials, atmosphere and guest comfort.
